What is mud fever?
Mud fever is an inflammation of the skin in the pastern, which can vary in severity. If left untreated, it can get worse, fluid can accumulate and lead to CPL (chronic progressive lymphedema), especially in cold-blooded animals.
Causes of mud fever
Various factors can cause mud fever:
- Storage mites : Create entry points for bacteria.
-
Reduced immunity: Weakens the natural defense against infections.
-
Damp stable, pasture or paddock: Disturbs the skin microbiome and weakens the natural defenses.
-
Sunburn : May cause mud fever in horses with white feet.
- Excessive washing of the legs: Makes the skin more susceptible to infections.
- Insect bites : Disrupt the skin microbiome and increase the risk of infection.
If your horse has problems with mud fever, it is important to find out the cause and contact a veterinarian.
