Dandruff in horse coats is widespread – but many riders don't know exactly what's really behind it. Many misconceptions circulate between stable rumors and half-knowledge. Time to uncover the biggest myths.
Myth 1: Dandruff is just a cosmetic problem
False – dandruff can indicate dry skin, parasites, or even infections. Ignoring it risks small irritations turning into serious skin problems.
Myth 2: Frequent washing improves the skin
On the contrary: Washing too frequently with harsh shampoos removes the skin's natural oils. This dries it out and causes it to produce even more dandruff. Less is more here.
Did you know? Your horse's skin makes up to 12% of its body weight. It is not only a protective layer but also an important part of the immune system. If it is weakened, problems quickly manifest in the form of dandruff or itching.
Myth 3: Only horses with winter coats get dandruff
Horses can also develop flaky skin in summer – for example, due to insects, allergies, or fungal infections. Season is not the only factor.
Myth 4: Dandruff disappears on its own
Sometimes yes – for example, after a coat change. But often the problem persists if the cause is not addressed. That's why a closer look is worthwhile.
Myth 5: All grooming products are the same
Not every ointment or shampoo is suitable for sensitive horse skin. Some products even worsen skin problems.
What can you really do?
If your horse suffers from flaky skin, three things in particular help:
-
Regular grooming: Daily brushing promotes blood circulation and removes loose flakes.
-
Gentle products: Make sure that shampoos and creams are horse-friendly and free of aggressive additives.
-
Check environment: Dust, dry stable air or wet bedding can additionally irritate the skin.
If the dandruff does not disappear despite care or even gets worse, a vet should clarify the cause.
Doderm – gentle support for healthy skin
Doderm contains natural antibodies from milk that specifically neutralize harmful bacteria and at the same time support the skin flora. This strengthens the skin barrier, soothes irritations and promotes regeneration – gently, effectively and without unnecessary additives.
